Certain results on the Möbius disjointness conjecture2017Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

We study certain aspects of the Möbius randomness principle and more specifically the Möbius disjointness conjecture of P. Sarnak. In paper A we establish this conjecture for all orientation preserving circle homeomorphisms and continuous interval maps of zero entropy. In paper B we show, that for all subshifts of finite type with positive topological entropy the Möbius disjointness does not hold. In paper C we study a class of three-interval exchange maps arising from a paper of Bourgain and estimate its Hausdorff dimension. In paper D we consider the Chowla and Sarnak conjectures and the Riemann hypothesis for abstract sequences and study their relationship.

    Time Optimizing near the Pay Zone2017Inngår i: Engineering, ISSN 1947-3931, E-ISSN 1947-394X, Vol. 9, nr 10, 848-858 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Well control techniques are used in oil and gas drilling operations to control bottom hole pressure and avoid any fluid influx from formation to the well. These techniques are highly important near the pay zone in term of time. Controlling formation fluid pressure and thereby the formations behavior in a predictable fashion will help toward more optimized environmental friendly drilling operation. Time consumed to control the formation fluid pressure will range between few hours to many days. This paper discusses hydrostatic pressure distribution and changes near the pay zone for one oil blocks in Kur- distan, in the northern part of Iraq. Obtaining homogeneous increase in some drilling fluid properties will help the engineer to better interpret sampling of the lithological columns and reduce potential hole problems and operationtime.

Femte nationella konferensen i svenska med didaktisk inriktning: Forskningens tillämpning i skolan, Växjö den 29–30 november 20072008Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Risk Management Concepts in Dam Safety Evaluation:Mosul Dam as a Case Study2017Inngår i: Journal of Civil Engineering and Architecture, ISSN 1934-7359, E-ISSN 1934-7367, Vol. 11, nr 7, 635-652 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Gradual shift has been observed lately of dam safety procedures from the conventional technical based towards a widerscope of risk management procedure based on risk analysis. The new approach considers the likelihood level of occurrence of a multitude of hazards and the magnitude of the resulting possible consequences in case of failure using rational cause and effect arguments. Most dam owners are shifting towards the use of the new risk based procedures; and even governments themselves are moving towards formalizing the new trend. Legislations in the United States were promulgated [1] after serious dam failures and the adoption of stringent levels of scrutiny led such federal dam owners to pioneer in this field and in developing the concepts and methods required. The corner stone in risk analysis is the definition of the potential modes that may lead to failure and assessment of the likelihood levels of their occurrence and possible category of the consequences which, after thorough evaluation, will shape thedecision making. This type of analysis was applied to Mosul Dam as a case study and resulted in definite recommendations.

    Physical mechanism of delta-delta '-epsilon phase stability in plutonium2017Inngår i: Scientific Reports, ISSN 2045-2322, E-ISSN 2045-2322, Vol. 7, 5632Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Based on first-principle calculations, we have systematically explored the nature of the elastic stability and the delta-delta'-epsilon phase transitions in pure Pu at high temperature. It is found that, both the electronphonon coupling and the spin fluctuation effects tend to decrease the tetragonal elastic constant (C') of delta-Pu, accounting for its anomalous softening at high temperature. The lattice thermal expansion together with the electron-phonon coupling can stiffen C' of epsilon-Pu, promoting its mechanical stability at high temperature. The delta-epsilon transition is calculated to take place around 750-800 K, and is dominated by the phonon vibration. The delta' intermediate phase is realized around 750 K mainly because of the thermal spin fluctuation.

Fjärde nationella konferensen i svenska med didaktisk inriktning: Tala, lyssna, skriva, läsa, lära – modersmåls-ndervisning i ett nordiskt perspektiv, Umeå 16–17 november 20062007Collection/Antologi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

Measurement of Self-Heating of Biomass Pellets using Isothermal Calorimetry2017Licentiatavhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Self-heating in storage facilities of biomass pellet can lead to spontaneous combustion. This has resulted in many fires over the years, causing both financial and environmental losses.

In order to assess the risk for spontaneous combustion of biomass pellets during storage, it is important to know how prone the fuel is to self-heating, i.e. to determine its reactivity. This thesis presents experimental work performed to develop a sensitive screening test procedure for biomass pellets, using isothermal calorimetry for direct measurement of the heat production rate. This method can be used to compare the reactivity of different biomass pellets. This could be useful for e.g. facility owners to gain better knowledge of their fuels propensity for self-heating and thereby facilitate safer storage.

The screening test procedure can also be used for research purposes. Experiments have been performed with 31 different biomass pellet batches to investigate how the pellet composition, origin, etc. influence the reactivity of the pellets. The results from these experiments clearly show a significant difference in reactivity between different types of pellets. The results indicate that pine/spruce mix pellets are significantly more reactive than all other types of pellets tested, and that pellets consisting of 100 % pine are more reactive than pellets consisting of 100 % spruce. Pellets produced from winery wastes, straw, or eucalyptus, have low reactivity compared to pellets consisting of pine and/or spruce. The reactivity of the pellets was shown to be reduced by either introducing certain types of anti-oxidants into the pellets or by extracting lipids from the raw material of pellets.

The screening test procedure is already being used today by some facility owners for assessing their fuels propensity for self-heating. The procedure is also one of the suggested test methods in “ISO/CD 20049 Solid biofuels — Determination of self-heating of pelletized biofuels”.

A Genre of Animal Hanky Panky?: Animal representations, anthropomorphism and interspecies relations in The Little Golden Books.2017Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This dissertation investigates the visual and verbal representations of animals in a selection of commercial picture books for a young readership of preschool children. The picture books selected are part of the Little Golden Book series. The first twelve books in this series were published in the United States in 1942 and are still in print today, while new books are continually being published. Because these popular picture books have had a broad readership from their inception and the books in the series have a uniform aesthetics, a comparative analysis provides insight into mainstream human-animal relationships.

Children’s literature is never innocent, and fraught with power imbalances. Animals become political beings, not only in the sense that they convey a didactic message, but in the sense that each animal representation carries a host of ideas and assumptions about human-animal relations with it. Using a theoretical framework that is grounded in Human Animal Studies (HAS), and more specifically literary animal studies, this dissertation analyzes the representation of human-animal interactions and relationships in different contexts.

Before the advent of HAS, anthropocentric, humanist interpretations of animal presence in children’s literature used to be prevalent. Commercial picture books in particular could benefit from readings that investigate animal presence without immediately resorting to humanist interpretations. One way of doing that is to start by questioning how interspecies difference and hierarchy is constructed in these books, verbally, visually and in the interaction between words and images. Based on this, we can speculate about the consequences this may have for the reader’s conceptualization of human-animal relationships. In children’s literature speciesism and ageism often intersect, for example when young children are compared with (young) animals or when animals are presented as stand-ins for young children. This dissertation explores the mechanisms behind the representation of species difference in commercial picture books.

The aim of this study is to analyze how commercial picture books like the Little Golden Books harbor a potential to shape young readers’ ideas about humanity and animality, species difference and hierarchy and the possibilities of interspecies interactions. The socializing function that is an important component of all children’s books makes that these picture books can shape readers’ attitudes from an early age. When reading children’s books featuring animals, the particular way these animals are represented guides the reader towards an ideology – and in the West, this ideology is predominantly anthropocentric. In Western cultures, children and animals are commonly thought of as natural allies, and as such they are often depicted as opposed to adult culture.

This dissertation identifies the ways in which certain conservative tendencies are activated by these commercial picture books, but also emphasizes that they can be a subversive space where anthropocentrism can be challenged. The case studies developed in this dissertation demonstrate how even so-called ’unsophisticated’ picture books contain interesting strains of animal related ideology worthy of in-depth analysis. The visual and verbal dimensions of these picture books show that these stories are embedded in a cultural context that helps give meaning to the animals. A recurring concern is the function of anthropomorphism and the role it plays in how we value the animals in these books. I am particularly interested in how picture books depict various degrees of anthropomorphism, because it has the potential to challenge species boundaries and disrupt the human-animal dichotomy.

Measurements of integrated and differential cross sections for isolated photon pair production in pp collisions at root s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector2017Inngår i: Physical review D, ISSN 2470-0010, Vol. 95, nr 11, 112005Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A measurement of the production cross section for two isolated photons in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 8 TeV is presented. The results are based on an integrated luminosity of 20.2 fb(-1) recorded by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurement considers photons with pseudorapidities satisfying vertical bar eta(gamma)vertical bar< 1.37 or 1.56 <vertical bar eta(gamma)vertical bar< 2.37 and transverse energies of respectively E-T,1(gamma) > 40 GeV and E-T,2(gamma) > 30 GeV for the two leading photons ordered in transverse energy produced in the interaction. The background due to hadronic jets and electrons is subtracted using data-driven techniques. The fiducial cross sections are corrected for detector effects and measured differentially as a function of six kinematic observables. The measured cross section integrated within the fiducial volume is 16.8 +/- 0.8 pb. The data are compared to fixed-order QCD calculations at next-to-leading-order and next-to-next-to-leading-order accuracy as well as next-to-leading-order computations including resummation of initial-state gluon radiation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithm or matched to a parton shower, with relative uncertainties varying from 5% to 20%.

    Measurement of forward-backward multiplicity correlations in lead-lead, proton-lead, and proton-proton collisions with the ATLAS detector2017Inngår i: Physical review C, ISSN 2469-9985, Vol. 95, nr 6, 064914Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Two-particle pseudorapidity correlations are measured in root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV Pb + Pb, root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV p+Pb, and root s = 13 TeV pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), with total integrated luminosities of approximately 7 mu b(-1), 28 nb(-1), and 65 nb(-1), respectively. The correlation function CN(eta(1),eta(2))is measured as a function of event multiplicity using charged particles in the pseudorapidity range |eta| < 2.4. The correlation function contains a significant short-range component, which is estimated and subtracted. After removal of the short-range component, the shape of the correlation function is described approximately by 1 + < a(1)(2)>(1/2) eta(1) eta(2) in all collision systems over the full multiplicity range. The values of < a(1)(2)>(1/2) are consistent for the opposite-charge pairs and same-charge pairs, and for the three collision systems at similar multiplicity. The values of < a(1)(2)>(1/2) and the magnitude of the short-range component both follow a power-law dependence on the event multiplicity. The short-range component in p + Pb collisions, after symmetrizing the proton and lead directions, is found to be smaller at a given eta than in pp collisions with comparable multiplicity.

Contribution Educational Leadership in Independent Muslim Schools: A Methodological Proposal

The phenomena of Muslim independent schools in Sweden is mainly discussed as an issue of social and cultural integration. This discourse have to been understood in the light of the transformation of Swedish school system has underwent. Meanings about the necessary of keeping religious influence and secularised education apart (Englund, 1996) are still strong. The state and municipals is looked up as warrants of this divide. At the same time 6 % of 134 000 pupils in independent schools attend confessionals schools in Sweden. The number of Islamic profiled school are increasing as the immigration from countries where the larger part of the population affirm themselves as Muslims. The Central Bureau of Statistics (2014) in Sweden predict that 20 % of the Swedish population either are immigrants or the children of immigrants in year 2020. A larger part of those immigrants will probably be Muslims with a wish to maintain their faith identity and recognized as Muslims (Thobani, 2011). To understand the context of leadership you need to have knowledge about the discourses about Islam and Muslims.

The aim of this paper is to discuss methodology to do research on educational leadership in Muslim schools. An empirical touchdown from my dissertation (Nilsson, 2015) will serve as a back-drop to do this.

The academic discourse about the outcomes of Muslim profiled schools education is divided (Nilsson, 2015). Either are Muslim Schools comprehended to maintain self-assurance and cultural recognition (Gerle, 1997) or as means of segregating children with different backgrounds from each other (Englund, 2010) and/or to reproduce patriarchy circumscribing democracy (Ali, 2009). The representation of Muslims and Muslim school in mass media and the civil sphere often held the

later opinion to be true (Shadid & Koningsveld, 2002). Especially when it comes to the establishment of a new school, prejudice are common among the members of the majority. An increasing Islamophobia in Europe is emerging and parents therefore chose Muslim profiled schools because they think they are safe. However Shah (Shah, 2015, p 140) argues that the interest in Islamic schools is reflecting a desire to make education not just a mean for developing and strengthening their faith identity but also as a vehicle for social mobility".

According to Durkheim, education is about transmitting knowledge and values to the next generation (Durkheim, 1956) and this process can in a social perspective bring about reproduction of social position (Bourdieu & Passeron, 1990) but also producing cultural meanings and crossing boarders of culture (Giroux, 2005). But how does cultural boarder crossing happens? My suggestion is to look up on educational leadership as a possible cultural boarder crossing. I understand the boarder crossing as a social performance which aims to re-fuse already de-fused meanings (Alexander, 2006). A social performance can be successful if it re-fuses meaning and change the audiences’' landscapes of meaning (Reed, 2011) and change the way of social life in the direction that the actor intend. This direction has in a normative perspective not be wanted. That's why, from a sociological point of view, I suggest that the social performance also is a question about content in aspects about whose cultural meanings getting re-fused or remains de-fused. The different content of the de-fusion/re- fusion is therefore understood as different modes of incorporation: assimilation, hyphenation and multicultural incorporation (Alexander, 2006). Integration in this perspective is about on-going internal social and cultural processes.

    Method

Under scrutinity is social performance and incorporation; ways of managing the future lives of the children. When performed, the curriculum consist of particular values, attitudes and dispositions. The curriculum taught "shapes perceptions of ethnic identity...struggles over ethnicity and curriculum" (Sleeter, 2015, p 231). The action of educational leaders are “set in motion by discursive and organizational conflicts over incorporation” (Alexander, 2001, s. 246) i.e. cultural meanings. The practises are tied to particular times and places located in a web of practice (politic, economic, cultural, language, family.) The educational leader breaks off certain aspects of other practices to motivate and legitimize pedagogies and therefore also construct different discourses of pathways to incorporation. From a sociological point of view the educational outcomes describes modes of incorporaton: i) assimilative ii) hyphenated iii) multicultural (Alexander, 2001). In an assimilative mode of incorporation the particular identity is expected to be hidden in public places. It is not appreciated e.g. if you talk your native language during breaks or wear the hijab in school. This mode of incorporetation reminds of what McLaren (1994, p 49) defines conservative (or corporate) multiculturalism. The goal is to assimilate everyone into the culture of the majority and the coregroup. A prinicipal that perform an assimilative educational leadership tries to persuade and get his audience to embrace standards of achievment that assimalte students of minorities "into skills, concepts, language, and values of the dominant society" (Sleeter, 2015). How and if it happens depends on the success or failure of the performance in a local context. In the hyphenated mode different identities are highlighted when it suits and benefits the majority (Banks, 1999).The third mode of incorporation is understood as multicultural. In this mode the particular identities and the majoritys' is seen as equal good, righteous, democratic and so are the institutions they represent (Alexander, 2006). According to (Banks, 1999, p 31) the mode is a "transformative approach, which changes ‘the canon, paradigms, and basic assumptions of the curriculum and enables students to view concepts, issues, themes, and problems from different perspectives and points of view".

    Expected Outcomes

I expect that the theory of social performance and incorporation can add important perspective on leadership, it means social performance and it's ends incorporation. Traditionally, educational leadership in multicultural school is understood as reproducing structures: symbolic, cultural and economic capital which constitute an assimilative mode of incorporation. In control of material elements such as structures and institutions e. g. means of symbolic productions: television and mass media, the chances for a successful assimilation of course increases. But it's not sufficient to re-fuse meanings with those performative elements. Even if you own and/or access means of symbolic production the others elements of the social performance e. g. authenticity of actor, the actual performance on the scene and the script has to be interpreted as true, real and natural. If the actor fails in these regards so does the re-fusion of meanings and it doesn't matter how much material recourses you use. The initial re-analyse of the ethnographic observation indicates that in the particular case the principal have to balance between different modes of incorporation. That's because different social groups have different normative hopes and beliefs about education, both within school and with external stakeholders, such as worried neighbours in connection with the establishment of the school. The principal explain how Islam, and the way Muslims use Islam, and be interpreted. Sometimes he criticises Islam and it's practising representatives, but above all he tries to reshape the characteristics society attributes to Muslim and Islam. The principal dedicates himself to talk about problems and solutions in a way that he identifies as Swedish. In this and other ways he attributes the Swedish society positive values at the same time as he weaves together the picture of himself and his work with a dominant narrative about the Swedish pragmatic society.

Testing Bridges to Failure: Experiences2017Inngår i: IABSE Symposium, Vancouver, 2017: Engineering the Future, Zürich, Switzerland: IABSE - International Association for Bridges and Structural Engineering , 2017, 2832-2839 s.Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Four bridges of different types have been tested to failure and the results have been compared to the load-carrying capacity calculated using standard code models and advanced numerical methods. The results may help to make accurate assessments of similar existing bridges. Here it is necessary to know the real behaviour, weak points, and to be able to model the load-carrying capacity in a correct way.

The four bridges were: (1) a one span steel truss railway bridge; (2) a two span strengthened concrete trough railway bridge; (3) a one span concrete trough bridge tested in fatigue; and (4) a five span prestressed concrete road bridge.

The unique results in the paper are the experiences of the real failure types, the robustness/weakness of the bridges, and the accuracy of different codes and models.

Sleep and media habits in school children and adolescents2015Inngår i: Journal of Sleep Disorders & Therapy, ISSN 2167-0277Artikkel i tidsskrift (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The aim was to investigate the effects of sleep, television use and texting and computer habits on overweight, enjoyment of school and feelings of tiredness at school in school-age children and adolescents. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Sweden on school children aged 6-16. A questionnaire was distributed to the children (n=3011 in survey I; n=204 in survey II). Children who slept less than the median length of time reported enjoying school to a lesser degree. Fewer hours of sleep were found to be associated with having a bedroom television using the television or computer more than 2 hours a day, being tired at school and having difficulties in sleeping and waking up. Overweight and obesity were found in 15.8% of the study population; obesity alone was found in 3.1%. Relationships between lifestyle factors and overweight were studied using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Having a bedroom television and using the television more than 2 hours per day were found to be associated with overweight but using the computer more than 2 hours a day was not. About 61% of the students aged 16 reported checking Facebook or social media at least once a day and 27% reported doing so for more than 10 times a day. One fourth of the students aged 16 had a habit of sending or receiving text messages at night at least once a week. Texting at night and frequent checking of Facebook and social media sites were related to sleep problems.

Ice Rink Dehumidification Systems Energy Usage and Saving Measures2014Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Ice skating rinks are one of the largest energy consumers in the building sector. The dehumidification function is one of the dominating energy users but is vital for the climate control in the ice rink. High humidity level causes extra diffusion load on the ice which affects the ice surface structure and risk to form condensation in the building structure. This study focuses on mass transfer phenomena in ice rinks. Three elements of the mass transfer mechanism are investigated: the mass transfer on the ice surface; the infiltration rate; and the dehumidifier energy consumption. The energy usage related to dehumidification of an ice rink is concluded to be as high as 15% of the total energy usage, which annually may correspond up to 150 MWh. A moisture balance model including infiltrations, moisture sources, condensation and dehumidification is proposed. A possible saving measure is to replace the electricity used for regeneration with recovered heat from the refrigeration system. Results from a case study show an electrical energy saving potential of 40% using other sources than electricity to heat the regeneration air.

    Abstract [en]

In \cite{B} Bourgain proves that Sarnak's disjointness conjecture holds for a certain class of Three-interval exchange maps. In the present paper we slightly improve the Diophantine condition of Bourgain and estimate the constants in the proof. We further show, that the new parameter set has positive, but not full Hausdorff dimension. This, in particular, implies that the Lebesgue measure of this set is zero.

In this paper we study different aspects of the Möbius randomness principle. We rephrase the Chowla, Sarnak conjectures and the Riemann hypothesis for abstract sequences and study their relationships. We, in particular, show, that in this setting the Chowla and Sarnak conjectures do not imply the Riemann hypothesis. In the second part of the paper we also study the connection between the multiplicative and additive van der Corput criteria.

An investigation on the use of snus and its association with respiratory and sleep-related symptoms: a cross-sectional population study2017Inngår i: BMJ Open, ISSN 2044-6055, E-ISSN 2044-6055, Vol. 7, nr 5, e015486Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Introduction Studies of the health effects of moist oral tobacco, snus, have produced inconsistent results. The main objective of this study is to examine the health effects of snus use on asthma, respiratory symptoms and sleep-related problems, a field that has not been investigated before. Methods and material This cross-sectional study was based on a postal questionnaire completed by 26 697 (59.3%) participants aged 16 to 75 years and living in Sweden. The questionnaire included questions on tobacco use, asthma, respiratory symptoms and sleeping problems. The association of snus use with asthma, respiratory symptoms and sleep-related symptoms was mainly tested in never-smokers (n=16 082). Results The current use of snus in never-smokers was associated with an increased risk of asthma (OR 1.51 (95% CI 1.28 to 1.77)), asthmatic symptoms, chronic bronchitis and chronic rhinosinusitis. This association was not present among ex-snus users. Snoring was independently related to both the former and current use of snus ((OR 1.37 (95% CI 1.12 to 1.68)) and (OR 1.59 (95% CI 1.34 to 1.89), respectively)). A higher risk of difficulty inducing sleep was seen among snus users. Conclusion Snus use was associated with a higher prevalence of asthma, respiratory symptoms and snoring. Healthcare professionals should be aware of these possible adverse effects of snus use.

Understanding Boundary Conditions for Brain Injury Prediction: Finite Element Analysis of Vulnerable Road Users2017Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Vulnerable road users (VRUs) are overrepresented in the statistics on severe and deadly injuries in traffic accidents, most commonly involving the head. The finite element (FE) method presents the possibility to model complex interactions between the human body and vehicles in order to better understand the injury mechanisms. While the rapid development of computer capacity has allowed for increasingly detailed FE-models, there is always a benefit of reducing the studied problem. Due to its material properties, the brain is more sensitive to rotational motion than to purely linear, resulting in complex injury causation. When studying brain injuries caused by a direct impact to the head, simulations using an isolated head model significantly increases efficiency compared to using a complete human body model. Also evaluation of head protective systems uses isolated mechanical head representations. It is not, however, established the extent to which the boundary conditions of the head determine the outcome of brain injuries.

FE models of both the entire human body and the isolated head were used in this thesis to study the effect of the body, as well as active neck muscle tension, on brain injury outcome in VRU accidents. A pediatric neck model was also developed to enable the study of age-specific effects. A vehicle windscreen model was developed to evaluate the necessity of capturing the failure deformation during pedestrian head impacts.

It was shown that the influence of the neck and body on brain injury prediction is greater in longer duration impacts, such as pedestrian head-to-windscreen impacts with an average difference of 21%. In accidents with shorter duration impacts, such as head-to-ground bicycle accidents, the average influence was between 3-12%. The influence did not consistently increase or limit the severity, and was dependent on the degree of rotation induced by the impact, as well as the mode of deformation induced in the neck. It was also shown that the predicted brain injury severity is dependent on capturing the large deformations of fractured windscreen, with the greatest effect near the windscreen frame. The pediatric neck model showed a large effect of age-dependent anatomical changes on inertial head loading, making it a promising tool to study the age-dependent effects in VRU accidents.

Specific exercises for subacromial pain: Good results maintained for 5 years2017Inngår i: Acta Orthopaedica, ISSN 1745-3674, E-ISSN 1745-3682, Vol. 88Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background and purpose — We have previously shown that specific exercises reduced the need for surgery in subacromial painpatients at 1-year follow-up. We have now investigated whetherthis result was maintained after 5 years and compared the outcomesof surgery and non-surgical treatment.Patients and methods — 97 patients were included in the previouslyreported randomized study of patients on a waiting list forsurgery. These patients were randomized to specifi c or unspecifi cexercises. After 3 months of exercises the patients were asked ifthey still wanted surgery and this was also assessed at the present5-year follow-up. The 1-year assessment included Constant–Murley score, DASH, VAS at night, rest and activity, EQ-5D, andEQ-VAS. All these outcome assessments were repeated after 5years in 91 of the patients. Results — At the 5-year follow-up more patients in the specifi cexercise group had declined surgery, 33 of 47 as compared with16 of 44 (p = 0.001) in the unspecifi c exercise group. The meanConstant–Murley score continued to improve between the 1- and5-year follow-ups in both surgically and non-surgically treatedgroups. On a group level there was no clinically relevant changebetween 1 and 5 years in any of the other outcome measuresregardless of treatment.Interpretation — This 5-year follow-up of a previously publishedrandomized controlled trial found that specifi c exercisesreduced the need for surgery in patients with subacromial pain.Patients not responding to specifi c exercises may achieve similargood results with surgery. These fi ndings emphasize that a specifi cexercise program may serve as a selection tool for surgery.

A policy problem that cannot escape its past: constraints on the reformation of safety policy2015Inngår i: Critical Policy Studies, ISSN 1946-0171, E-ISSN 1946-018X, Vol. 9, nr 2, 158-176 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Within many current policy theories there is a tendency to first identify change and then explainit. A retrospective analysis of policy changes risks missing continuous processes and struggles forchange as well as mechanisms of resistance to change. Taking this as a point of departure, thispaper develops an understanding of the policy process as a struggle over meaning, as a way toallow for a more nuanced understanding of the dynamics of policy change and continuity. Thisapproach is illustrated by an analysis of the formation of public safety policy in Sweden.Alternative storylines giving ‘new’ meanings to the policy problem were strategicallyincorporated into the policy discourse. However, it is found that an ideational path-dependency ofthe policy constrains the possibility for problem reformulation and thereby also the possibility forpolicy change. The discourses that instantiated the policy problem not only affect the ways inwhich the problem is rendered thinkable for the purposes of its government, but also for policyanalysts as well as the public. The analysis shows that it is crucial to understand the interrelationsbetween different discourses (within policy, politics and research) to understand the mechanismsof policy change and continuity.

Measuring Water Droplets to Detect Atmospheric Icing2017Licentiatavhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

This thesis describes the exploration of a method to measurethe droplet size and the concentration of atmospheric liquid water. The purpose is to find a cost effective technique to detect the conditions for icing on structures.

Icing caused by freezing atmospheric water can be a signifi- cant problem for infrastructure such as power lines, roads and air traffic. About one third of the global installed wind power capacity is located in cold climates, where icing of rotor blades is one of the major challenges.

The icing process is complex and the result depends on a combination of the aerodynamic shape of the structure or airfoil, the velocity of the air and its contained water, the temperature, the mixing of snow and water, the concentration of liquid water and the Droplet Size Distribution (DSD).

The measurement method is based on a shadowgraph imag- ing system using light emitting diode (LED) light as background illumination and digital image processing. A prototype instru- ment has been constructed. The components were selected keeping the possibility of low-cost volume production in mind. The applications of a commercial instrument based on this tech- nique are e.g. real-time in-situ icing condition measurements and assimilation and verification of data in numerical weather models.

The work presented shows that measurements of the size and concentration of water droplets using shadowgraph images can be used for the comparison and validation of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models and other instruments. The accuracy of the particle size measurement is high. The accuracy of the concentration measurement has the potential to become high due to the single-particle measurement range calibraiton. The precision of the instrument depends mainly on the number of images that is used to find each measurement value. The real-time performance of the instrument is limited by the image retrieval and processing speed and depends on the  precisionrequired.

The relative importance of institutional trust in countering feelings of unsafety in disadvantaged neighbourhoods2013Inngår i: European Spatial Research And Policy, Vol. 20, nr 1, 73-95 s.Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The segregated nature of urban areas reflects an uneven exposure to risk and unsafety. This article analyzes the relevance of place to people’s feelings of unsafety by comparing questionnaire responses from people living in a segregated, disadvantaged neighbourhood to a random sample of people living in the same city. The results suggest that the central factors explaining the individual’s feelings of unsafety differ in this particular neighbourhood compared to the broader population. The article shows that place has a moderating effect on feelings of unsafety. Trust in public institutions is argued to be particularly important in segregated, disadvantaged neighbourhoods because of its potential to prevent feelings of unsafety.

Different indicators of socioeconomic status and their relative importance as determinants of health in old age2017Inngår i: International Journal for Equity in Health, ISSN 1475-9276, E-ISSN 1475-9276, Vol. 16, nr 1, 173Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background: Socioeconomic status has been operationalised in a variety of ways, most commonly as education, social class, or income. In this study, we also use occupational complexity and a SES-index as alternative measures of socioeconomic status. Studies show that in analyses of health inequalities in the general population, the choice of indicators influence the magnitude of the observed inequalities. Less is known about the influence of indicator choice in studies of older adults. The aim of this study is twofold: i) to analyse the impact of the choice of socioeconomic status indicator on the observed health inequalities among older adults, ii) to explore whether different indicators of socioeconomic status are independently associated with health in old age.

Methods: We combined data from two nationally representative Swedish surveys, providing more than 20 years of follow-up. Average marginal effects were estimated to compare the association between the five indicators of SES, and three late-life health outcomes: mobility limitations, limitations in activities of daily living (ADL), and psychological distress.

Results: All socioeconomic status indicators were associated with late-life health; there were only minor differences in the effect sizes. Income was most strongly associated to all indicators of late-life health, the associations remained statistically significant when adjusting for the other indicators. In the fully adjusted models, education contributed to the model fits with 0-3% (depending on the outcome), social class with 0-1%, occupational complexity with 1-8%, and income with 3-18%.

Conclusions: Our results indicate overlapping properties between socioeconomic status indicators in relation to late-life health. However, income is associated to late-life health independently of all other variables. Moreover, income did not perform substantially worse than the composite SES-index in capturing health variation. Thus, if the primary objective of including an indicator of socioeconomic status is to adjust the model for socioeconomic differences in late-life health rather than to analyse these inequalities per se, income may be the preferable indicator. If, on the other hand, the primary objective of a study is to analyse specific aspects of health inequalities, or the mechanisms that drive health inequalities, then the choice of indicator should be theoretically guided.

Users and producers: Online News as Mediated Participation2017Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The purpose of this thesis is to illuminate principles that guide mediated participation, taking place through the interplay between users and news producers. Therefore, the study focuses both how spaces for participation are structured (by news producers) and those that exert participatory practices (news users). The research design thus has an approach that ties together analytical strands that previously have been studied separately. The research questions concern how the conditions comprising mediated participation – in terms of opportunities for users’ participatory practices – differ between (1a) various types of online news sites, and (1b) various types of news, as well as how users exercise participatory practices (2a) on various types of news sites, and (2b) in connection to various types of news. The last research question (3) concerns how users express the connection to news producers, through participatory practices within participatory spaces. The thesis includes four papers, that together answer the research questions by applying content and text analyses to various types of news sites (big city national, local rural area, morning broadsheets and evening tabloids) and its content: news articles and features for user participation, such as comments and sharing news through social media (i.e., Facebook and Twitter).

The results show that users and news producers take diverging approaches to user participation adjacent to online news. This is illustrated by the fact that the categories of news that users are most often permitted to interact with, coincide precisely with the news that users tend to decline to interact with, while the news categories that users tend to interact with (when given the chance) occur comparatively sparse. The results also show that news producers are much more prone to permit users to share news through social media, than to permit them to comment news on the news site. Almost all news are made to permit users to share news through Facebook and Twitter, whereas commenting news is substantially more restricted, and even more so among big city national news sites than among local rural area news sites. When it concerns user practices, users share news on Facebook 20 times more often than they share news through Twitter or comment news on news sites. Tweeting news almost only occurs in news sites affiliated with big city national newspapers, and most prominently so when it concerns evening tabloids. This means (when controlling for differences in circulation) that commenting as a user practice tend to have a more local character than tweeting news, with its more national focus.

The connection between users and news producers is shaped by the approach these groups of actors take to each other, under different circumstances. Sharing news through Facebook and commenting on news sites, are not interchangeable practices. Nor is tweeting news from a news site affiliated with national tabloid compared to from a local morning newspaper. And although it is well known from extant research that producers hold hesitant views concerning users’ influence over content, users also express distrust when it concerns how professional media practices allow various actors salience in the media. These ideas primarily concern “elites” versus “commoners”, differences between public service and commercial media, regulations and media, including roles, genres, and formats. These ideas also concern whether representational principles should guide media representation or if certain views should be excluded, whether journalists’ political views affect media performance, and how crime news should be presented in terms of what events are published and representations of victims and perpetrators. Overall, the thesis illustrates that there are connections between various forms of electronic communication (i.e., commenting and sharing news through Facebook and Twitter), and the specific contextual and social settings that news sites are embedded within, with its specific situated audience, shaping the connections between users and news producers.

An Iron Age Magnate Farm at Odarslöv: a local centre in the realm of Uppåkra2017Inngår i: Journal of Archaeology and Ancient History, ISSN 2001-1199, nr 20Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In this article, a newly excavated Iron Age farm with an associated gravefield and its surrounding landscape outside the city of Lund is examined, discussed, analysed and placed in its context. The biography of the farm spans about 400 years, from the Late Roman Iron Age to the Early Vendel Period. Through all phases, the farm remains on a restricted plot and shows both stability and prosperity. It is argued that the farm, based on its size, the number and types of buildings and the find material, can be considered a magnate farm. As magnates, the farm owners must have played an important role in the local community during a time when society underwent change and transition. The farm and the farm owners’ relation to Uppåkra and the rulers of the central place are discussed.

Catching the Spore killers: Genomic conflict and genome evolution in Neurospora2017Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

A genome is shaped by many different forces. Recombination can for instance both create and maintain genetic diversity, but the need to locally reduce recombination rates will also leave specific signatures. Genetic elements can act selfishly and spreading at the expense of the rest of the genome can leave marks of their activity, as can mechanisms that suppresses them, in a phenomenon known as genomic conflict. In this thesis, I have studied the forces driving genome evolution, using modern genome sequencing techniques and with a special focus on a class of selfish genetic elements known as Spore killers found in the fungus Neurospora. First, we show novel findings on large-scale suppression of recombination by non-structural means in the N. tetrasperma genomes. In contrary, in the genomic region harbouring the spore killer elements Sk-2 and Sk-3 of N. intermedia, a dense set of inversions that are interspersed with transposable elements have accumulated. The inversions are unique for each killer type, showing that they have a long separated evolutionary history and likely have established themselves independently. For the Sk-2 haplotype, where we have polymorphism data, we see signs of relaxed selection, which is consistent with the hypothesis that recombination suppression reduces the efficacy of selection in this region. These results show the strong effects the divergent selective forces of genomic conflicts can have on chromosome architecture. Furthermore, we investigate the hypothesis that spore killing can drive reproductive isolation, by comparing the fertility of crosses between N. metzenbergii and either killer or non-killer N. intermedia strains. We show that crosses with spore killer strains have lower fertility, which cannot be explained by the killing itself, but is potentially caused by an incompatibility gene captured in the non-recombining region. Finally, we identified the genetic element responsible for causing spore killing in the Sk-1 spore killer strains found in N. sitophila. Unlike the Sk-2 and Sk-3 elements, Sk-1 is not connected to a large, non-recombining region, but is caused by a single locus, and we also find indications that this locus was introgressed from N. hispaniola.

Intendenturpersonalens arbetsmiljö: arbetsmiljö, arbetsupplevelser, motivation och sjukskrivningar på passagerarfartyg2017Rapport (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [sv]

The evolution of the Swedish auditor's report2017Doktoravhandling, monografi (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

The auditor’s report has been criticised for being uninformative at least since the late nineteenth century. Despite persistent requests for detailed information in order to facilitate users’ decision-making processes, auditors have only recently started to provide entity-specific information in their reports.

Against this background, two research questions are raised: (1) What were the driving forces behind the evolution of the auditor’s report? (2) How can dissatisfaction with and misperceptions of audit reporting be reduced in order to support financial statement users’ decision-making processes? As the object of study, the Swedish auditor’s report is chosen since it has, up to the present day, deviated from reports in other jurisdictions and thus enables an extension of knowledge in the field of audit reporting.

The first part of this dissertation contributes to previous auditing history and auditing profession research by answering the first research question through an analysis of approximately 1,800 historical Swedish auditor’s reports and numerous related documents. Applying a critical-theory perspective, the research findings suggest that during the course of history, auditors were able to adopt an auditor’s rather than a user’s perspective despite arguing in the interest of users.

The second part of the dissertation contributes to previous audit reporting and expectation gap research by answering the second research question through a vignette experiment with Swedish financial statement users. The research findings indicate that dissatisfaction with the current auditor’s report can be reduced through additional entity-specific information concerning the auditor’s independence, the audit process and the audit findings, and less general information about the auditor’s responsibilities.

Overall, this dissertation connects past events concerning the auditor’s report to current challenges and indicates possible future developments.

Elaboration and negotiation of new content: The use of meaning making resources in multilingual science classrooms2017Inngår i: NFSUN Nordic Research Symposium on Science Education 2017: Paper presentations – posters – symposia – workshops, 2017, 17-20 s.Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

This presentation reports results from a study aiming at examining multilingual students’ meaning-making in science when instructed through Swedish. Focus is on how new content is elaborated and negotiated through various semiotic resources such as written and spoken language, still and moving images, gestures and physical artefacts. Data consist of video and audio recordings and digital photographs from two multilingual physics classrooms (students aged 11-12 and 14-15 respectively) and one biology classroom (students aged 14-15 years). Theoretically, the project takes its stance in social semiotics and pragmatist theory. Data are analysed through systemic functional linguistics, multimodal analyses and Dewey’s principle of continuity. The results show that the teachers and the students were engaged in meaning-making activities involving a variety of semiotic resources in ways that sometimes matched both students’ linguistic and scientific level. However, some observations indicate classroom practices that might constitute a hindrance for meaning-making. The study has implications for ways of promoting multilingual students’ meaning-making in science, including learning science, competent action, that is, norms about how to act in the science classroom, and communicating through different modes.

The case of a missing person? The current L2 self and the L2Motivational Self SystemInngår i: International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism, ISSN 1367-0050, E-ISSN 1747-7522Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In Dörnyei's (2009a) theorizing, motivation is conceptualized to be generated by discomfort associated with the learner's experience of a discrepancy between their current L2 self, and their ideal L2 self. However, in the L2 Motivational Self System, this discrepancy is not operationalized. A questionnaire containing measures of current L2 selves was administered to two cohorts of students learning English in Sweden, one in grade 7, and one in grade 9. Using structural equation modelling, results revealed that the discrepancy between the ideal L2 self and the current L2 selfwas greater for the grade 7 cohort. So too was the impact on a criterion variable measuring intended effort. Arguments for the operationalization of the selfdiscrepancy process in research designs are put forward. In studies tracking changes over time, it is suggested that the inclusion of a variable measuring the current L2self could provide important insights into self-discrepancy trajectories, facilitate the investigation of motivational dynamics, and bring greater sensitivity to intervention design.
