Experimental Constraints on Forecasting the Location of Volcanic Eruptions from Pre-eruptive Surface Deformation2018Inngår i: Frontiers in earth science, ISSN 2296-6463, Vol. 6, artikkel-id UNSP 7Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Volcanic eruptions pose a threat to lives and property when volcano flanks and surroundings are densely populated. The local impact of an eruption depends firstly on its location, whether it occurs near a volcano summit, or down on the flanks. Then forecasting, with a defined accuracy, the location of a potential, imminent eruption would significantly improve the assessment and mitigation of volcanic hazards. Currently, the conventional volcano monitoring methods based on the analysis of surface deformation assesses whether a volcano may erupt but are not implemented to locate imminent eruptions in real time. Here we show how surface deformation induced by ascending eruptive feeders can be used to forecast the eruption location through a simple geometrical analysis. Our analysis builds on the results of 33 scaled laboratory experiments simulating the emplacement of viscous magma intrusions in a brittle, cohesive Coulomb crust under lithostatic stress conditions. The intrusion-induced surface deformation was systematically monitored at high spatial and temporal resolution. In all the experiments, surface deformation preceding the eruptions resulted in systematic uplift, regardless of the intrusion shape. The analysis of the surface deformation patterns leads to the definition of a vector between the center of the uplifted area and the point of maximum uplift, which systematically acted as a precursor to the eruption's location. The temporal evolution of this vector indicated the direction in which the subsequent eruption would occur and ultimately the location itself, irrespective of the feeder shapes. Our findings represent a new approach on how surface deformation on active volcanoes that are not in active rifts could be analysed and used prior to an eruption with a real potential to improve hazard mitigation.

Split-Ring Resonator Sensor Penetration Depth Assessment Using In Vivo Microwave Reflectivity and Ultrasound Measurements for Lower Extremity Trauma Rehabilitation2018Inngår i: Sensors, ISSN 1424-8220, E-ISSN 1424-8220, Vol. 18, nr 2, artikkel-id 636Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

In recent research, microwave sensors have been used to follow up the recovery of lower extremity trauma patients. This is done mainly by monitoring the changes of dielectric properties of lower limb tissues such as skin, fat, muscle, and bone. As part of the characterization of the microwave sensor, it is crucial to assess the signal penetration in in vivo tissues. This work presents a new approach for investigating the penetration depth of planar microwave sensors based on the Split-Ring Resonator in the in vivo context of the femoral area. This approach is based on the optimization of a 3D simulation model using the platform of CST Microwave Studio and consisting of a sensor of the considered type and a multilayered material representing the femoral area. The geometry of the layered material is built based on information from ultrasound images and includes mainly the thicknesses of skin, fat, and muscle tissues. The optimization target is the measured S-11 parameters at the sensor connector and the fitting parameters are the permittivity of each layer of the material. Four positions in the femoral area (two at distal and two at thigh) in four volunteers are considered for the in vivo study. The penetration depths are finally calculated with the help of the electric field distribution in simulations of the optimized model for each one of the 16 considered positions. The numerical results show that positions at the thigh contribute the highest penetration values of up to 17.5 mm. This finding has a high significance in planning in vitro penetration depth measurements and other tests that are going to be performed in the future.

Osteoprotegerin Is Associated With Major Bleeding But Not With Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients With Acute Coronary Syndromes: Insights From the PLATO (Platelet Inhibition and Patient Outcomes) Trial2018Inngår i: Journal of the American Heart Association: Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Disease, ISSN 2047-9980, E-ISSN 2047-9980, Vol. 7, nr 2, artikkel-id e007009Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background-Elevated levels of osteoprotegerin, a secreted tumor necrosis factor-related molecule, might be associated with adverse outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease. We measured plasma osteoprotegerin concentrations on hospital admission, at discharge, and at 1 and 6months after discharge in a predefined subset (n=5135) of patients with acute coronary syndromes in the PLATO (Platelet Inhibition and Patient Outcomes) trial. Methods and Results-The associations between osteoprotegerin and the composite end point of cardiovascular death, nonprocedural spontaneous myocardial infarction or stroke, and non-coronary artery bypass grafting major bleeding during 1year of follow-up were assessed by Cox proportional hazards models. Event rates of the composite end point per increasing quartile groups at baseline were 5.2%, 7.5%, 9.2%, and 11.9%. A 50% increase in osteoprotegerin level was associated with a hazard ratio (HR) of 1.31 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.21-1.42) for the composite end point but was not significant in adjusted analysis (ie, clinical characteristics and levels of C-reactive protein, troponin T, NT-proBNP [N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide], and growth differentiation factor-15). The corresponding rates of non-coronary artery bypass grafting major bleeding were 2.4%, 2.2%, 3.8%, and 7.2%, with an unadjusted HR of 1.52 (95% CI, 1.36-1.69), and a fully adjusted HR of 1.26 (95% CI, 1.09-1.46). The multivariable association between the osteoprotegerin concentrations and the primary end point after 1month resulted in an HR of 1.09 (95% CI, 0.89-1.33); for major bleeding after 1month, the HR was 1.33 (95% CI, 0.91-1.96). Conclusions-In patients with acute coronary syndrome treated with dual antiplatelet therapy, osteoprotegerin was an independent marker of major bleeding but not of ischemic cardiovascular events. Thus, high osteoprotegerin levels may be useful in increasing awareness of increased bleeding risk in patients with acute coronary syndrome receiving antithrombotic therapy.

Constraint-Based Register Allocation and Instruction Scheduling2018Doktoravhandling, med artikler (Annet vitenskapelig)
    Abstract [en]

Register allocation (mapping variables to processor registers or memory) and instruction scheduling (reordering instructions to improve latency or throughput) are central compiler problems. This dissertation proposes a combinatorial optimization approach to these problems that delivers optimal solutions according to a model, captures trade-offs between conflicting decisions, accommodates processor-specific features, and handles different optimization criteria.

The use of constraint programming and a novel program representation enables a compact model of register allocation and instruction scheduling. The model captures the complete set of global register allocation subproblems (spilling, assignment, live range splitting, coalescing, load-store optimization, multi-allocation, register packing, and rematerialization) as well as additional subproblems that handle processor-specific features beyond the usual scope of conventional compilers.

The approach is implemented in Unison, an open-source tool used in industry and research that complements the state-of-the-art LLVM compiler. Unison applies general and problem-specific constraint solving methods to scale to medium-sized functions, solving functions of up to 647 instructions optimally and improving functions of up to 874 instructions. The approach is evaluated experimentally using different processors (Hexagon, ARM and MIPS), benchmark suites (MediaBench and SPEC CPU2006), and optimization criteria (speed and code size reduction). The results show that Unison generates code of slightly to significantly better quality than LLVM, depending on the characteristics of the targeted processor (1% to 9.3% mean estimated speedup; 0.8% to 3.9% mean code size reduction). Additional experiments for Hexagon show that its estimated speedup has a strong monotonic relationship to the actual execution speedup, resulting in a mean speedup of 5.4% across MediaBench applications.

The approach contributed by this dissertation is the first of its kind that is practical (it captures the complete set of subproblems, scales to medium-sized functions, and generates executable code) and effective (it generates better code than the LLVM compiler, fulfilling the promise of combinatorial optimization). It can be applied to trade compilation time for code quality beyond the usual optimization levels, explore and exploit processor-specific features, and identify improvement opportunities in conventional compilers.

Suppression of the Verwey Transition by Charge Trapping2018Inngår i: Annalen der Physik, ISSN 0003-3804, E-ISSN 1521-3889, Vol. 530, nr 3, artikkel-id 1700363Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The Verwey transition in Fe3O4 nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 6.3 nm is suppressed after capping the particles with a 3.5 nm thick shell of SiO2. By X-ray absorption spectroscopy and its associated X-ray magnetic circular dichroism this suppression can be correlated to localized Fe2+ states and a reduced double exchange visible in different site-specific magnetization behavior in high magnetic fields. The results are discussed in terms of charge trapping at defects in the Fe3O4/ SiO2 interface and the consequent difficulties in the formation of the common phases of Fe3O4. By comparison to X-ray absorption spectra of bare Fe3O4 nanoparticles in course of the Verwey transition, particular changes in the spectral shape could be correlated to changes in the number of unoccupied d states for Fe ions at different lattice sites. These findings are supported by density functional theory calculations.

Slow evolution of sex-biased genes in the reproductive tissue of the dioecious plant Salix viminalis2018Inngår i: Molecular Ecology, ISSN 0962-1083, E-ISSN 1365-294X, Vol. 27, nr 3, s. 694-708Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

The relative rate of evolution for sex-biased genes has often been used as a measure of the strength of sex-specific selection. In contrast to studies in a wide variety of animals, far less is known about the molecular evolution of sex-biased genes in plants, particularly in dioecious angiosperms. Here, we investigate the gene expression patterns and evolution of sex-biased genes in the dioecious plant Salix viminalis. We observe lower rates of sequence evolution for male-biased genes expressed in the reproductive tissue compared to unbiased and female-biased genes. These results could be partially explained by the lower codon usage bias for male-biased genes leading to elevated rates of synonymous substitutions compared to unbiased genes. However, the stronger haploid selection in the reproductive tissue of plants, together with pollen competition, would also lead to higher levels of purifying selection acting to remove deleterious variation. Future work should focus on the differential evolution of haploid- and diploid-specific genes to understand the selective dynamics acting on these loci.

Grant-free Radio Access IoT Networks:Scalability Analysis in Coexistence Scenarios2018Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

IoT networks with grant-free radio access, likeSigFox and LoRa, offer low-cost durable communications overunlicensed band. These networks are becoming more and morepopular due to the ever-increasing need for ultra durable, interms of battery lifetime, IoT networks. Most studies evaluatethe system performance assuming single radio access technologydeployment. In this paper, we study the impact of coexistingcompeting radio access technologies on the system performance.Considering K technologies, defined by time and frequencyactivity factors, bandwidth, and power, which share a set of radioresources, we derive closed-form expressions for the successfultransmission probability, expected battery lifetime, and experienceddelay as a function of distance to the serving access point. Our analytical model, which is validated by simulation results, provides a tool to evaluate the coexistence scenarios and analyzehow introduction of a new coexisting technology may degrade thesystem performance in terms of success probability and batterylifetime. We further investigate solutions in which this destructiveeffect could be compensated, e.g., by densifying the network toa certain extent and utilizing joint reception.

Performance Evaluation and Optimization of LPWAIoT Networks: A Stochastic Geometry Approach2018Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Leveraging grant-free radio access for enabling lowpowerwide-area (LPWA) Internet of Things (IoT) connectivityhas attracted lots of attention in recent years. Regarding lack ofresearch on LPWA IoT networks, this work is devoted to reliabilitymodeling, battery-lifetime analysis, and operation-controlof such networks. We derive the interplay amongst density ofthe access points, communication bandwidth, volume of trafficfrom heterogeneous sources, and quality of service (QoS) incommunications. The presented analytical framework comprisesmodeling of interference from heterogeneous sources with correlateddeployment locations and time-frequency asynchronousradio-resource usage patterns. The derived expressions representthe operation regions and rates in which, energy and costresources of devices and the access network, respectively, couldbe traded to achieve a given level of QoS in communications. Forexample, our expressions indicate the expected increase in QoSby increasing number of transmitted replicas, transmit power, density of the access points, and communication bandwidth. Our results further shed light on scalability of such networksand figure out the bounds up to which, scaling resources cancompensate the increase in traffic volume and QoS demand. Finally, we present an energy-optimized operation control policyfor IoT devices. The simulation results confirm tightness of thederived analytical expressions, and indicate usefulness of themin planning and operation control of IoT networks.

Self-organized Low-power IoT Networks: ADistributed Learning Approach2018Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Enabling large-scale energy-efficient Internet-ofthings(IoT) connectivity is an essential step towards realizationof networked society. While legacy wide-area wireless systemsare highly dependent on network-side coordination, the level ofconsumed energy in signaling, as well as the expected increase inthe number of IoT devices, makes such centralized approachesinfeasible in future. Here, we address this problem by selfcoordinationfor IoT networks through learning from pastcommunications. To this end, we first study low-complexity distributedlearning approaches applicable in IoT communications. Then, we present a learning solution to adapt communicationparameters of devices to the environment for maximizing energyefficiency and reliability in data transmissions. Furthermore, leveraging tools from stochastic geometry, we evaluate theperformance of proposed distributed learning solution againstthe centralized coordination. Finally, we analyze the interplayamongst energy efficiency, reliability of communications againstnoise and interference over data channel, and reliability againstadversarial interference over data and feedback channels. Thesimulation results indicate that compared to the state of the artapproaches, both energy efficiency and reliability in IoT communicationscould be significantly improved using the proposedlearning approach. These promising results, which are achievedusing lightweight learning, make our solution favorable in manylow-cost low-power IoT applications.

Latency-Energy Tradeoff based on ChannelScheduling and Repetitions in NB-IoT Systems2018Konferansepaper (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) is the latest IoT connectivitysolution presented by the 3GPP. NB-IoT introduces coverageclasses and introduces a significant link budget improvementby allowing repeated transmissions by nodes that experiencehigh path loss. However, those repetitions necessarily increase theenergy consumption and the latency in the whole NB-IoT system. The extent to which the whole system is affected depends on thescheduling of the uplink and downlink channels. We addressthis question, not treated previously, by developing a tractablemodel of NB-IoT access protocol operation, comprising messageexchanges in random-access, control, and data channels, bothin the uplink and downlink. The model is then used to analyzethe impact of channel scheduling as well as the interaction ofcoexisting coverage classes, through derivation of the expectedlatency and battery lifetime for each coverage class. These resultsare subsequently employed in investigation of latency-energytradeoff in NB-IoT channel scheduling as well as determiningthe optimized operation points. Simulations results show validityof the analysis and confirm that there is a significant impact ofchannel scheduling on latency and lifetime performance of NBIoTdevices.

Profiles of patient and tumour characteristics in relation to health-related quality of life after oesophageal cancer surgery2018Inngår i: PLoS ONE, ISSN 1932-6203, E-ISSN 1932-6203, Vol. 13, nr 4, artikkel-id e0196187Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Strong deterioration in health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is a major concern in a sub-group of long-term oesophageal cancer survivors. This study aimed to identify potential clustering of patients and tumour variables that predicts such deterioration. Patient and tumour variables were collected in a prospective cohort of patients who underwent surgery for oesophageal cancer in Sweden 2001–2005. Latent cluster analysis identified statistically significant clustering of these variables. Multivariable logistic regression adjusted for age, BMI, tumour stage and marital status was used to determine odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) between patient profiles and HRQOL at 3 and 5 years from surgery. Among 155 included patients at 3 years, three patient profiles were identified: 1) ‘reference profile’ (males, younger age, employed, upper secondary education, co-habitating, urban dwellers, adenocarcinoma and advanced tumour stage) (n = 47;30%), 2) ‘adenocarcinoma profile’ (middle age, unemployed/retired, males, low education, co-habitating, adenocarcinoma, advanced tumour stage, tumour in lower oesophagus/cardia, and co-morbidities (n = 79;51%), and 3) ‘squamous-cell carcinoma profile’ (unemployed/retired, middle-age, males, low BMI, urban dwellers, squamous-cell carcinoma, tumour in upper/middle oesophagus (n = 29;19%). These profiles did not differ regarding most HRQOL measures. Exceptions were the squamous-cell carcinoma profile, reporting more constipation (OR = 5.69; 95%CI: 1.34–24.28) and trouble swallowing saliva (OR = 4.87; 95%CI: 1.04–22.78) and the adenocarcinoma profile reporting more dyspnoea (OR = 2.60; 95%CI: 1.00–6.77) and constipation (OR = 3.31; 95%CI: 1.00–10.97) compared to the reference profile. Three distinct patient profiles were identified but these could not explain the substantial deterioration in HRQOL observed in the sub-sample of survivors.

Groundwater-surface water interactions across scales in a boreal landscape investigated using a numerical modelling approach2018Inngår i: Journal of Hydrology, ISSN 0022-1694, E-ISSN 1879-2707, Vol. 560, s. 184-201Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Groundwater and surface-water interactions are regulated by catchment characteristics and complex inter- and intra-annual variations in climatic conditions that are not yet fully understood. Our objective was to investigate the influence of catchment characteristics and freeze-thaw processes on surface and groundwater interactions in a boreal landscape, the Krycklan catchment in Sweden. We used a numerical modelling approach and sub-catchment evaluation method to identify and evaluate fundamental catchment characteristics and processes. The model reproduced observed stream discharge patterns of the 14 sub-catchments and the dynamics of the 15 groundwater wells with an average accumulated discharge error of 1% (15% standard deviation) and an average groundwater-level mean error of 0.1 m (0.23 m standard deviation). We show how peatland characteristics dampen the effect of intense rain, and how soil freeze-thaw processes regulate surface and groundwater partitioning during snowmelt. With these results, we demonstrate the importance of defining, understanding and quantifying the role of landscape heterogeneity and sub-catchment characteristics for accurately representing catchment hydrological functioning.

Do dual-mobility cups cemented into porous tantalum shells reduce the risk of dislocation after revision surgery?: A retrospective cohort study on 184 patients2018Inngår i: Acta Orthopaedica, ISSN 1745-3674, E-ISSN 1745-3682, Vol. 89, nr 2, s. 156-162Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Background and purpose Dual-mobility cups (DMCs) reduce the risk of dislocation and porous tantalum (TM) shells show favorable osseointegration after acetabular revision surgery, yet the combination of these implants has not been studied. We hypothesized that (1) cementing a DMC into a TM shell decreases the risk of dislocation; (2) DMCs cemented into TM shells are not at greater risk of re-revision; (3) liberation of tantalum ions is marginal after use of this combined technique.Patients and methods We investigated the outcome in 184 hips (184 patients) after acetabular revision surgery with TM shells, fitted either with DMCs (n = 69), or with standard polyethylene (PE) liners (n = 115). Chart follow-up was complete for all patients, and the occurrence of dislocations and re-revisions was recorded. 20 were deceased, 50 were unable to attend follow-up, leaving 114 for assessment of hip function after 4.9 (0.5-8.9) years, radiographs were obtained in 99, and tantalum concentrations in 84 patients. Results 1 patient with a DMC had a dislocation, whereas 14 patients with PE liners experienced at least 1 dislocation. 11 of 15 re-revisions in the PE group were necessitated by dislocations, whereas none of the 2 re-revisions in the DMC group was performed for this reason. Hence, dislocation-free survival after 4 years was 99% (95% CI 96-100) in the DMC group, whereas it was 88% (CI 82-94, p = 0.01) in the PE group. We found no radiographic signs of implant failure in any patient. Mean tantalum concentrations were 0.1 mu l/L (CI 0.05-0.2) in the DMC group and 0.1 mu g/L (CI 0.05-0.2) in the PE group.Interpretation Cementing DMCs into TM shells reduces the risk of dislocation after acetabular revision surgery without jeopardizing overall cup survival, and without enhancing tantalum release.

    Integrin αVβ3 can substitute for collagen‐binding β1‐integrins in vivo to maintain a homeostatic interstitial fluid pressure2018Inngår i: Experimental Physiology, ISSN 0958-0670, E-ISSN 1469-445X, Vol. 103, nr 5, s. 629-634Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

Accumulated data indicate that cell‐mediated contraction of reconstituted collagenous gels in vitro can serve as a model for cell‐mediated control of interstitial fluid pressure (PIF) in vivo. A central role for collagen‐binding β1‐integrins in both processes has been established. Furthermore, integrin αVβ3 takes over the role of collagen‐binding β1‐integrins in mediating contraction after perturbations of collagen‐binding β1‐integrins in vitro. Integrin αVβ3 is also instrumental for normalization of dermal PIF that has been lowered due to mast cell degranulation with compound 48/80 (C48/80) in vivo. Here we demonstrate a role of integrin αVβ3 in maintaining a long term homeostatic dermal PIF in mice lacking the collagen‐binding integrin  α11β1 (α11−/− mice). Measurements of PIF were performed after circulatory arrest. Furthermore, cell‐mediated integrin αVβ3‐directed contraction of collagenous gels in vitro depends on free access to a collagen site known to bind several extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins that form substrates for αVβ3‐directed cell attachment, such as fibronectin and fibrin. A streptococcal collagen‐binding protein, CNE, specifically binds to and blocks this site on the collagen triple helix. Here we show that whereas CNE perturbed αVβ3‐directed and platelet‐derived growth factor BB‐induced normalization of dermal PIF after C48/80, it did not affect αVβ3‐dependent maintenance of a homeostatic dermal PIF. These data imply that dynamic modification of the ECM structure is needed during acute patho‐physiological modulations of PIF but not for long‐term maintenance of a homeostatic PIF. Our data thus show that collagen‐binding β1‐integrins, integrin αVβ3 and ECM structure are potential targets for novel therapy aimed at modulating oedema formation and hypovolemic shock during anaphylaxis.

Manganese pyrosilicates as novel positive electrode materials for Na-ion batteries2018Inngår i: SUSTAINABLE ENERGY & FUELS, ISSN 2398-4902, Vol. 2, nr 5, s. 941-945Artikkel i tidsskrift (Fagfellevurdert)
    Abstract [en]

A carbon-coated pyrosilicate, Na2Mn2Si2O7/C, was synthesized and characterized for use as a new positive-electrode material for sodium ion batteries. The material consists of 20–80 nm primary particles embedded in a ≈10 nm-thick conductive carbon matrix. Reversible insertion of Na+ ions is clearly demonstrated with ≈25% of its theoretical capacity (165 mA h g−1) being accessible at room temperature at a low cycling rate. The material yields an average potential of 3.3 V vs. Na+/Na on charge and 2.2 V on discharge. DFT calculations predict an equilibrium potential for Na2Mn2Si2O7 in the range of 2.8–3.0 V vs. Na+/Na, with a possibility of a complete flip in the connectivity of neighboring Mn-polyhedra – from edge-sharing to disconnected and vice versa. This significant rearrangement in Mn coordination (≈2 Å) and large volume contraction (>10%) could explain our inability to fully desodiate the material, and illustrates well the need for a new electrode design strategy beyond the conventional “down-sizing/coating” procedure.
